(SOMEONE ELSE, Did Not Write This)

Some define mathematics as the study of quantity; others, a study of abstract theorems; others, the rigorous production of logical proofs; others, a function mapping coffee to publishable papers. All seem to agree that long division, tensor calculus, prime numbers, and 4 dimensional geometry are mathematical pursuits. What many scarred by the United States education system are unaware of is the difference between grade school math - focusing on teaching people to execute certain algorithms - and college and research level math - a study of the relations between ideas and finding creative logical solutions to difficult technical problems.
