[UNRECOVERED] Distributed Systems - Prattle-tiled Parliaments

“The critics often invent authors; they select two dissimilar works - the Tao Te Ching and the 1001 Nights, say - attribute them to the same writer and then determine most scrupulously the psychology of this interesting homme de lettres...”

Language Game: Prattle-tiled Parliaments

A distributed system (run between readers devices?) considers metaphors and problems in classic distributed systems papers and expositions. In particular, literary text is generated as messages are sent between individual readers (who make choices about wording and stylistic transformations?), but with no authoritative source text, no guarantee messages will be received, or received in time, leading to substantially different emergent texts. I am particularly interested in the political metaphors in distributed systems.

Metaphors considered:

  • Leader election (will think about how to approach the most famous and challenging historical one "master / slave")
  • Consensus (and false or coercive assertions of collective agreement)
  • Resilience & recovery
  • The gaps, failures, and delays of speech
  • Sabotage & imposters (I personally am interested in the relationship to the tropes of the imposter, passing, & closetedness in queerness & gender performance)
  • Divergent senses of time

Much of the work will involve thinking about clear & interesting ways to associate each of these metaphors with a textual operation.

Theory: Distributed Systems

The study of computing in systems that cannot communicate with each other perfectly, and where individual processes may not always be relied upon. Another way of saying this is that distributed computing considers computational systems under conditions of asynchrony and partial failure.
