Theory: Cellular Automata

Cellular automata are a class of algorithms and metaphors that model complex processes by the local interactions of cells following simple rules: mathematician John Conway's game of life is often seen as their origin. In it, there are a grid of squares that are dark or light. After each round, a square turns light if it is surrounded by 2 or 3 light squares, and otherwise turns dark.

OHELLOHI ILIEHIDE variations explores the way digital language
flickers between being arithmetic data and social communication.
Dualities consciously considered include: consonant/vowel,
left/right, vertical/horizontal, language/data, sense/gibberish,
alive/dead, speaker/interlocutor, and etiquette/confession. A
2^6x2^6 grid of 6 letters, chosen for their ability to combine
promiscuously into many short words, are cycled and transformed by
Conway's "Game of Life," simulating growth in a grid of "alive" and
"dead" cells, a degeneration that produces structure from noise.
Reloading leads to the same blank-yet-overdetermined greeting, but
a different logorrheic selection of letters from left and right,
towards a different shape.
